Most of us who come from ABAP programming background these days thinking to find a good opportunity around us but most of the companies/projects are nowadays looking for UI5 and Fiori.
As an ABAP developer, I wonder,
would it be good for my career to switch to UI5 now?
How much ABAP knowledge is required to learn ABAP?
What skillset is required to be a Fiori Developer?
What is the best suitable module for me to meet market expectations?
Who can guide me right on the next career path?
How much time does it take to learn it?
Does it need any Java knowledge? because as an ABAPer, I would only want to work with ABAP and little more...
Here are your answers:
So let me tell you my story, I was working as an ABAP developer for 10 years & associated ABAP technologies with RICEFs. I have realized that this ABAP skill set is not more about taking my career ahead. I am more or less doing same things for many years and have no fun and learning at my work. But most of the time, I was afraid of word JAVA, so I never tried to switch anywhere my focus.
SAP had introduced the SAP UI5 and Fiori in 2015 and these steps had made the dialog programming obsolete forever. Not that all, indeed it will replace the webdynpro, portal, and BSP forever as well. We only have now maintenance work in ABAP, Webdynpro, Portal etc.
Initially, I could not believe in but when I saw one of my teammates moving to an offshore project just because he developed a single screen page in SAP UI5 by copy-pasting from the internet (jealously;). I realized there is really something in it to explore.
Initially, my thoughts were that I need to learn java, later when I explored some tutorials, I realized early that I was wrong...
We need Java Script, which is completely different from Java programming in design, purpose, and usage. There is nothing in common between them except the word Java..surpried... I was too.
I have started exploring more tutorials, came across SAP UI5 SDK , which is the central place for all the documentation for any new bee. Exploring more, I found some YouTube tutorials, I observed that most of the trainers are doing this Copy Paste of code to teach the core concepts (even Open SAP courses was disappointed that way), when we want to develop something big and different for the real-time use case, we lag in the concepts since there is just copy-paste around us.
I have decided, that the day I will learn it, I will not let anyone else have the same feeling which I was going through. That's when Anubhav Trainings has introduced a promise of no copy-paste. The strategy worked not just for myself but for thousands of your out there.
It helps ABAP developers like me, who are unknowingly fearful of learning UI5. Now its been 5 years, and trust me it has given a lot to me, as they always say "if you ware not upgrading, you're downgrading".
In the end, I would say, No matter where you learn these new technologies from, but important is to learn and making sure learning has to be part of your goals just like your project goals.
After learning and developing some POCs, Services, Applications, you get a boost in your confidence that "yeah, things work!!"
